TIRAMISÚ is an Italian dessert that has gained popularity around the world.
Although its exact origin is up for debate, it is believed that this delicious dessert has its roots in northern Italy, in the Veneto region and more specifically in the city of Treviso.
The history of tiramisu is relatively recent compared to other classic Italian desserts.
One of the best-known stories suggests that tiramisu was created in the 1960s at the “Casa di cura delle suore di Treviso” (Care House of the Nuns of Treviso), an elderly care institution. It is said to have been designed as a nutritious dessert to give energy to patients.
Another version attributes the invention of tiramisu to the restaurant “Le Beccherie” in Treviso, where chef Alba Campeol supposedly created it in 1969.
The name “tiramisu” roughly translates to “lift me up” or “pull me up,” referring to its energizing effect due to caffeine and sugar.
The traditional tiramisu recipe includes alternating layers of Savoy sponge cakes soaked in strong coffee and marsala, with layers of a delicious cream made with mascarpone cheese, egg yolks and sugar.
Cocoa powder is often sprinkled over the top layer for a finishing touch. Although tiramisu has evolved over time and numerous variations have been created, its popularity remains undeniable.
This Italian dessert has conquered the palates of many people around the world and has become a timeless classic of Italian gastronomy.
